USGA Summary Points: | Golf courses are important urban greenspaces that can provide services to the community irrespective of whether an individual participates in golf. There is growing recognition that nature based solutions are critical to urban planning and golf courses are in the crosshairs of urban planning issues so this work is timely. If golf courses were developed into residential or industrial uses, we estimate that it could cost society $2-20M per course in just climate or stormwater-based ecosystem services. We will continue to build off this platform by adding additional ecosystem services and working to integrate our work into existing urban planning processes. We have developed an approach that would allow anyone in the US to evaluate the ecological value of a golf course compared to other scenarios, but it is critical to include social and economic considerations in urban planning and the ongoing discussion about golf courses and housing availability. |
