Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard: | "This is a very rare book that is a must for collectors of historical turfgrass books. It is the first turfgrass book written by a woman. It is a key book on both agronomic turfgrass culture and management of golf courses. It was the most advanced work of its time, with both the fundamentals and how-to aspects presented. Note the inclusion of chapters on Growing Choice Flowers and Golf in Community Welfare. These were truly modern topics for golf course operations that were seldom addressed in the 1930s. The chapter subject titles include the following:
I. A Short History of Golf II. Description Standard Eighteen Holes III. Greenkeeper in the Making IV. Soils, Fertilization and Growth V. Drainage and Water Systems VI. Grasses VII. Teeing Grounds VIII. Fairways IX. Putting Greens X. Hazards XI. Top-Dressing and Turf Repair XII. Weeds and Diseases XIII. Birds, Animals and Insects XIV. Equipment and Supplies XV. Keeping Course Records XVI. Greenkeeper in the South XVII. Concrete Construction. XVIII. Golf Course Tees XIX. Growing Choice Flowers XX. Golf in Community Welfare" p. 223 |

Annotation from Golf Course Design, by Geoffrey S. Cornish and Michael J. Hurdzan: | "The first book on course maintenance written by a woman includes many observations and suggestions presented in a logical and down-to-earth manner. Gertrude Farley was an immensely constructive secretary to the GCSAA in its early years. She endeavored to keep her status as a woman hidden by using only her initials. Hopefully that issue has disappeared from contemporary society." p. 117 |
Cornish & Hurdzan Ratings: | D1; C2; M4; H5 |
Quotable quotes | "DO NOT USE ANY HUMUS OR NATIVE SOIL WHICH CONTAINS A TOXIC AGENT! DO NOT USE FRESH MANURES OF ANY KIND!" p. 113 "In the nine-hole community golf course, which is laid out with sound knowledge and vision as a potential eighteen holes of golf. lies the progress of the game in its true relation to the civic welfare of the people of America." p. 256 |
