Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard:"A slight revision of a relatively rare book. Lawrence Dickinson suggested the following procedure for mole control:

An inexpensive and effective method of eliminating the mole is to cut an old inner tube, fasten one end to the exhaust pipe of an automobile (any make) and the other end to a hose. Carefully insert the hose in the central part of runway. Be sure the run is not blocked by falling earth so as to prevent a free flow of the exhaust gas (carbon monoxide). Let the automobile engine run slowly for twenty minutes and Mr. Mole is painlessly killed. Mole runs should be tamped (after the mole has been killed) and thoroughly watered so as to hasten the rooting of the lifted grass plants." p. 212
