Regarding mowing turfgrasses in 1923 by the manual scythe versus the mechanical reel mower, MacDonald stated the following:
With the advent of the lawn mower, a great change occurred in the treatment and condition of lawns. The scythe was an implement which required a very considerable amount of skill and concentration of energy to keep the turf to the required smoothness. With the lawn mower the work is of a more mechanical nature, and the lawns have suffered accordingly. About the middle of the last century it was one of the most exhilarating sights possible to see in the early morning a band of mowers swinging their scythes in unison as they cut the grass on the lawns whilst it was yet wet with dew." p. 272 |
