Abstract/Contents:"Nitrogen is a primary determinant of agricultural crop productivity and ornamental crop quality. It is also a relatively expensive input for many crops. Unfortunately, N uptake efficiency by crops is often quite low, rarely exceeding 60% absorption of the N applied. This is due to several physical nd biological processes, such as leaching, gaseous losses, and microbiological immobilization, which compete with the crop for N. A detailed understanding of both root absorption and the competing processes should ultimately result in more efficient N absorption, more profitable plant production, and less NO₃ leaching into and contaminating surface and groundwaters." Also describes second experiment, which analyzed the binding of nitrates.
