Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard:"This extensive book is a must reference source for collectors of turfgrass books. It represents a compilation of turfgrass scientific, technical, and popular literature published over the previous 300 years. The Bibliography contains over 16,000 references listed alphabetically by author and is cross indexed on a subject basis containing more than 40,000 entries. It is a unique, one-of-kind book. In the process of assembling the publications required for references in the Bibliography, the Noer Memorial Turfgrass Library was initiated by Dr. Beard at Michigan State University, with the support of Director of Libraries Dr. Richard Chapin. This Bibliography won the Oberly Award of the American Library Association in 1979, a seldom awarded honor." p. 170
Beard Section Heading:Bibliography of books/monographs on turfgrass culture
Annotation from
Golf Course Design,
by Geoffrey S. Cornish and Michael J. Hurdzan:
"This is the most complete bibliography concerning turfgrass, with 16,000 entries arranged by author and 40,000 by subject. Dr. Beard, a recognized giant in this field, compiled the bibliography over a ten year period as supporting literature for 'Turfgrass Science and Culture'. According to the USGA Green Section Record, January- February, 2004, 'The Beard Turfgrass Library is the finest personal collection of turf-related material in existence'." p. 115
Quotable quotes"This Turfgrass Bibliography was compiled over a ten-year period by the senior editor while assembling supporting literature to write the textbook, Turfgrass: Science and Culture, published by Prentice-Hall, Inc. After completion of the textbook, it seemed appropriate that this collection of literature be made available to the general public since less than ten percent of the over 16,000 references were actually cited in the textbook."
"A significant portion of this turfgrass literature appears in obscure state and regional turfgrass publications that are not included in such standard reference sources as Biological Abstracts, Herbage Abstracts, Agricultural Index, Horticultural Abstracts, Bioresearch Index, and Crop Science Abstracts."
