Abstract/Contents:Discusses the relationship between producer expectations and consumer expectations in sod production. States that "the sod producer is interested in how rapidly the sod knits, how easily it harvests, and how well it can be handled and transported. The producer wants to grow a quality sod with minimal pest problems, resulting ultimately in consumer satisfaction and a profit for the grower...Consumers are interested in having an instant lawn of high quality. They want reduced expense and ease in maintenance. The consumer also wants a turf with minimal pest problems." Presents a study comparing several different Kentucky bluegrass cultivars for establishment rate, sod tensile strength, and rooting characteristics. Concludes that "growing sod with producer and consumer interests in mind is not an issue of conflict as one might first suspect. The producer needs cultivar and blend selections that meet his requirements to produce a crop at a profit. The consumer requires cultivars and blends that give him desired turf quality, ease in maintenance, and a minimum of pest problems." Suggests selecting "cultivars for blends based on their performance in the production area...[and using] cultivars and blends that have the best possibility of minimizing major pest problems, but also satisfy your production requirements."
