Abstract/Contents:"Temporary and permanent seedings were made at two week intervals from May, 1961 through November, 1961 on highway slopes near Effingham, Illinois. Oats and rye were the temporary species seeded. A complex permanent mixture containing predominately alfalfa and fescue and a permanent mixture presently used by the Illinois Division of Highways containing Korean lespedeza and fescue were the permanent mixtures seeded. Permanent seedings provided as much ground cover as temporary seedings in 1961 except in the late fall seedings where the temporary seedings provided more ground cover. In 1961 oats provided more ground cover than rye in the early summer seedings. By November, 1962 the temporary seedings, which were overseeded on September 20, 1961 with the highway permanent mixture, provided less cover than the permanent seedings, especially the seedings made in mid-summer. In 1962 there was more cover from the plots seeded to oats than those seeded to rye. All treatments were established by 1963. The slopes established with the highway permanent mixture began to decline in total ground cover in 1964 due to a reduction of legumes."
