Abstract/Contents:"The 41,000 miles of the Interstate Highway System which will be completed in 1972 will encompass over 1,250,000 roadside acres within its right-of-way. Erosion control and soil stabilization on these acres are vital to the very existence of the structures, pavement, and drainage systems. Since the "Complete Highway" is a permanent strip of real estate through your town and mine it must be pleasing to the eye, as well as safe, efficient, and economical to maintain. Vegetation most completely accomplishes these objectives. The role of agronomy is intricately entwined throughout the planning, design, contsruction and maintenance stages. The FULL value of the agronomic profession to the highway field has not been clearly expounded or espoused. The SOCIETY must assume its natural leadership in promoting more awareness of the need that the highway field and the agronomic profession have for each other. The INDIVIDUAL agronomist must encourage his particular institution to view highway roadside areas as acres of a valued "protective crop." HE has an obligation to become involved in highway problems at the LOCAL level."
