Abstract/Contents:"A 200 acre dump of deep-mine waste "tailings" was stabilized against wind erosion or dusting to preclude a condition of air-pollution at Lebanon, Pennsylvania in the spring of 1962 by the Bethlehem Steel Company. Many species of trees and shrubs were first hand-planted throughout the area, followed by the seeding of turf and forage crops as a ground cover. Seeding was done hydraulically using a paper pulp mulch "slurry" in which was carried the seed, fertilizer and sulphur. Site was too soft to support mechanical equipment but was accessible to the hydraulic method using long lengths of hose. Despite adverse chemical and physical aspects of the site, the vegetative stabilization has proven to be completely successful and the once barren waste now supports a young forest. The conclusion is drawn that other sites considered too adverse to support plant growth may be successfully afforested, depsite contradictory soil analysis, by using this combination of paper pulp mulch with the hydroseeding technique of application."
