Abstract/Contents: | "The number and length of leaves, stems, and certain other plant parts of 14 turfgrasses (centipedegrass, Myer and Emerald Zoysia, common and Tiffine bermuda, Toronto bent, creeping red fescue, tall fescue, buffalograss, rough bluegrass, Merion and three selections of Kentucky bluegrass) were measured in the sun and under 70% shade. The shade, in general, reduced the number of these plant parts and the length of rhizomes. The above ground stems and leaves were elongated in the shaded pants. Some of the turfgrasses considered adapted to the shade, showed lesser reduction of plant parts. Marion bluegrass which does poorly in the shade had a greater percentage reduction of leaf and rhizome number than a shade adapted bluegrass. The bluegrasses and bermuda grasses had greatly increased plant height and leaf length. These changes result in poor turf density in the shade." |
