| Abstract/Contents: | "Temperature, light interception, and wind velocity were measured along highway slopes with different exposures, sod densities, and mowing heights throughout the season to correlate with plant response. Correlations are shown between light interception, sod densities, plant height, and soil surface temperatures. Close clipping causes a marked rise in the soil surface temperature on an established sod. This effect is found throughout the season on cloudy as well as clear days. Soil surface temperatures in excess of 135° F. were found on south facing slopes in summer. In winter temperatures of over 85° were found on sunny slopes compared with freezing temperatures on shaded slopes. Wind velocities at the slope surface were greatly reduced by sod compared with unsoded areas." |
