| Abstract/Contents: | "Four years of testing tensiometers under field conditions showed these instruments can be effective as a guide to determine frequency and length of irrigation applications for turfgrass, provided sprinklers distribute the water evenly and mechanical aeration and thatch control management practices are followed. A completely automatic sprinkler control system, where tensiometers installed at 3-inch and 8-inch depths are attached to a timing device, has been operating sucessfully at the University of California at Los Angeles since May 1963. A suction of 36 centibars at the 3-inch depth or a suction of 24 centibars at the 8-inch depth will activate the time-control system to operate the sprinklers at a predetermined time. Water is applied for 5 minutes each hour until the suction is lowered at the tensiometer which activated the control system. The water application frequency is associated with changing climatic factors, while the length of irrigation is determined by water needs at the upper or lower root zones. A similar installation on a golf course has functioned with complete satisfaction since April 1964." |
