Abstract/Contents:"Overseeding tests were conducted from 1959 to 1964 at Richmond, Williamsburg, and Newport News, Virginia. Overseeded common ryegrass gave good ground cover and color during the fall and winter, but often caused poor spring transitions and blending with the finer Bermuda greens. Pennlawn and Chewing's fescue persisted during hot spring weather to give a gradual transition. Poa species were slow to become established in the fall and develop during the winter. Poa travialis did provide satisfactory winter turf, but was of poor quality during the spring mainly because of disease. Poa annua infestations were reduced when common ryegrass or bent with fine fescue was used. Early Oct. overseedings were superior than those made in mid-Sept. Best winter turf was obtained by vertically mowing prior to overseeding and then soil topdressing. More nitrogen fertilization was needed for common ryegrass than for fine fescue mixtures. Cool season grasses overseeded on Tifgreen Bermuda tees showed that mixtures of: (a) 15 pounds common ryegrass, 2.5 pounds Poa travialis and 5 pounds Pennlawn and (b) 20 pounds common ryegrass and 6 pounds of Pennlawn/1,000 sq. ft. were superior to other grasses tested."
