Abstract/Contents:"The influence of numerous manufactured and natural mulching materials were evaluated for their ability to control erosion and aid in establishing turf on roadsides. Common bermudagrass, planted as seed sprigs was the test plant used in these studies. Each mulching material was rated for uniformity of application, erosion resistance, and its' influence on the test plants at 7, 14, 48, 56, 180 and 360 days after seeding. Straw, ground corn cobs, Glassroot (fiberglass), Turfiber (wood cellulose), Turfiber + asphalt and Turfiber + latex reduced initial soil erosion and improved the germination and seedling development of bermudagrass. Small grain straw provided greater erosion protection than the other mulches during the establishment period. But subsequent measurements showed little or no differences in erosion and percent ground covered due to mulches. Exceptions were Soil Gard (latex) and asphalt alone which reduced germination and seedling growth with subsequently less ground cover."
