Abstract/Contents:"Vertical mulching (boring 3/4-inch holes on 2-inch center spacing and backfilling with 6 parts fine sand, 1 part nitrohumus, and 3 parts of peat, calcined clay or lignified redwood shavings) was done on sections of a golf green which had very compact soil. Parts of the green which recived routine mechanical aerator treatment were used as checks. Roots grew in backfilled and open holes but very poorly in undisturbed soil. The oxygen diffusion rate in compact soil was very low. Vertical mulching caused a decrease in amount of undesirable Poa annua. The green had to be periodically removed from play because the turf on the check areas could not be maintained. Vertical mulching is a practical means of rejuvenating greens on compacted soil."
