Abstract/Contents:"Various mixtures were seeded on back slopes with good soil preparation versus no preparation. Turfiber, straw, hay, excelsior, Soil-Set, pine needles, vermiculite, and Glassroot were tested as mulch materials. Failure resulted in many instances when no preparation was used. Failure sometimes occurred when the soil was prepared and fertilizer and lime applied on the surface. Thorough preparation in which fertilizer and lime were incorporated into the soil always gave best results. Mulches were essential in almost all instances. The best mulches were pine needles, hay or straw, excelsior, and Glassroot with straw or hay. Glassroot alone was not satisfactory. Mulches that contained no weed seed were preferable."
