Abstract/Contents:"Creeping sand from inland dunes has created a costly maintenance problem along the Mid-Cape highway at Provincetown, Mass. Plots have been established to determine the most effective and economical ways of stilling and revegetating the shifting sands. Seedings of drought resistant plants were most successful with tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), coastal panic grass (panicum amarulum), and weeping lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula). The use of various mulches as an aid in seedling establishment was of little value. Beachgrass transplants in spacing plots were established to determine their sand stilling effects. Machine planting of beachgrass properly fertilized and with spacing 18" x 36" produced excellent cover by fall. This method of transplanting and spacing is most economical and is equal to the conventional method of spacing. Machinery was modified to aid in seeding and beachgrass transplanting. Shrubs and woody plants are being established as permanent cover on sand dunes."
