Abstract/Contents:"Retention of the herbicides 2,4-D, Atrazine, CIPC, Monuron, Tordon and Trifluralin is accomplished in the Hagerstown silt loam soil primarily by complexing between the herbicide and the soil organic matter and by physical bonding to the inorganic colloids. Physical bonding is largely polar attraction and other Van der Waals attractions and hydrogen bonding. All of these herbicides can be ionized but this normally does not occur under natural soil conditions. Tordon and 2,4-D complex with ferric iron at pH of 6.5 to 7.5 but the solubility of iron is so slight at this pH that the overall effect can be neglected. Chemical bonding could not be demonstrated. Herbicides were selected to represent most of the groups of soil applied herbicides and the Hagerstown soil to represent a large group of upland agricultural soils; however, the data indicate that extreme care must be exercised in trying to generalize from specific findings."
