Abstract/Contents:"A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted in which Astoria bent, Velvet bent, Creeping bent and Kenucky Merion bluegrass were grown in soil using muriate of potash, fritted potassium, and orthoclase as sources of potassium. The utilization of potassium by these grasses was studied. An evaluation was made of the difference in performance between muriate of potash and the other sources which release their potassium slowly. Plant color and vigor, root and foliage yields, and potassium content were used to evaluate the various treatments. Fritted potassium used in a single application early in the season and finely ground orthoclase, when applied in large quantities, served as satisfactory sources of potassium for a growing season of six months, and produced turf equal to that grown with periodical muriate of potash fertilization. The bent grasses not only utilized large quantities of the non-exchangable potassium from the orthoclase but they also used large quantities of the non-exchangeable potassium from the soil. There was a correlation between the cation exchange capacity of roots and the ability to utilize non-exchangeable potassium."
