| Abstract/Contents: | "Pre-emergence herbicides were applied to lawn turf in April 1963. Azak, bandane, betasan, calcium arsenate, chlordane, dacthal, and zytron were included in this test. The soil, a typical loam of central New Jersey, was sampled at 0 to 2 inches and 2 to 4 inches in December. Twenty-three inches of rain fell between the treatment and sampling dates. Five-inch pots were filled with the respective soil samples and planted with plugs of mature Merion Kentucky bluegrass. The cultures were grown for 18 days in the greenhouse. Reductions in topgrowth from the chemical residues were rather frequent. Root growth, into soil taken from the 0 to 2 inch horizon, was seriously reduced for samples that received azak and betasan. Pre-emergence herbicide residues had sufficient influence on Kentucky bluegrass type lawn turf to justify greater study of this factor prior to their widespread use." |
