Abstract/Contents: | "One to five applications of amine methylarsonate were required to kill nutsedge tubers under greenhouse conditions. Arsenic content of individual tubers at the time no new growth developed ranged from 51 ppm. following one application to 11 ppm. following five applications. Arsenic content of the treated tuber in a 3-tuber chain ranged from 23 ppm. following one application to 245 ppm. following four applications. Arsenic content of the other tubers in 3-tuber chains increased from 2 ppm. initially to 25 ppm. following three to four applications. The wide range in arsenic content in treated tubers at the time shoot development ceased indicated that arsenic buildup was not the primary cause of lethality. Effects of arsenic appear to be depletion of the bud supply on active tubers through repeated shoot-kill and activation of buds on dormant tubers making treatment of these possible. Selective control of purple nutsedge in bermudagrass turf is possible with 2 to 3 ounces per 1000 square feet of disodium, amine, or monoammonium methylarsonates. Three to five applications are necessary the first year of treatment and one or more applications the succeeding year." |
