Abstract/Contents:"Texturf-1F bermudagrass was fertilized semi-monthly, monthly, and bimonthly with various nitrogen sources including a 12-9-6 fertilizer containing 38 percent humic acid. Humic acid is a fraction of the active part of soil organic matter. In a second study, fertilizer containing humic acid-nitrogen ratios of 1.6:1, 3.2:1, and 10.8:1 were used. The 12-9-6 humic acid fertilizer gave less spring and summer growth and color response per unit of nitrogen at 7 to 14 pounds of N per 1000 square feet than either ammonium nitrate or urea. Fall growth and color were comparable with the three sources. Growth and color were satisfactory with semi-monthly and monthly applications and more uniform than with bimonthly applications. Where the 12-9-6 humic acid fertilizer was applied in increments exceeding 2 pounds of N per application, a limited initial response was followed by a period of retarded growth and deficient color. Growth response decreased with increasing humic acid to nitrogen ratios. Nitrogen recovery in the clippings was low with all treatments. Spring growth and color following the second year of treatment indicated no differences among treatments in residual nitrogen. Root weights were variable and showed no relationship to treatment."
