| Abstract/Contents: | Briefly discusses installation of halogen light bulbs. States that a superintendent should not "touch a halogen bulb with [his] bare hand" and suggests handling the bulb with "a clean piece of paper." Mentions that "oil, grease, salt and dirt can produce a tiny hole in the glass when it heats up, and the bulb's internal gas escapes. Air, with oxygen, gets in, and oxidation quickly eats through the wire...The bulb literally burns out." Also suggests "while...handling the bulb with special care, take the time to make sure the electrical contacts in the bulb's sockets are clean and shiny. Higher bulb temperature speeds up corrosion in the socket. And there's more time for crud to form, since the bulb has a longer life. Corrosion reduces the electrical flow through the filament, can shorten its life, and can also reduce the light output." |
