| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the relation of cylinder compression pressure to the digital world, noting that "technicians cannot rely only on electronics to tell them what's happening inside an engine. You must use compression tests to learn the condition of the piston as it strokes up and down, and the valves as they open and close." Details methods of compression testing, wet testing, and bleed down pressure testing, suggesting that "a perfect engine will give the same reading for each cylinder...In the real world, you want all cylinder readings to be in shouting range of the ideal pressure and all cylinders to be within 10 to 15 psi (pounds per square inch) of each other." Mentions the potential of larger high-speed mutli-cylinder engines to cause the exhaust to open just before the intake fully closes, producing an "overlap" effect that might render bleed-down tests ineffective. |
