Abstract/Contents:Describes a problem encountered by Greg Brandriet, superintendent of Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club, when he discovered that the water level in his irrigation pond had significantly decreased over the winter. Explains that the leakage occurred because of several large fissures in the walls of the pond, due to a concentration of the mineral gypsum, "a white, sulfate-based mineral often found in veins in the Black Hills region." States that "we had no time and no other choice but to consider that the hole was evidence of a seasonal spring, or possibly a groundwater shift caused by the addition of roads and culverts when the course was constructed." Details how the grounds team created a temporary fix by filling in the fissures with concrete, and how it was later discovered that there was an extraneous drain pipe in the bottom of the pond accounting for the water loss.
