| Abstract/Contents: | "In tests conducted during the Summer of 1956 and 1957, disodium methyl arsonate (DSMA) was found to selectively control Dallisgrass in Bermudagrass turf. Rates of 3 to 5 ounces of technical DSMA in 2 to 4 dallons [gallons] of water per 1,000 square feet gave about 90% eradication of Dallisgrass except in extremely dense stands where more material and water may be needed. A study of some factors as they influence the action of DSMA included temperature, moisture, wetting agent, method of application, activators, rates, volumes, and plant density. The mode of action of DSMA appears to be a combination of contact and translocation. DSMA, especially at a low rate in the greenhouse, was more effective when applied as a fine droplet spray containing a wetting agent to Dallisgrass growing under a slight water stress. Indications are that the density of Dallisgrass cover is instrumental in determining the proper rate of DSMA and especially volume of diluent to use for most effective control. Ammonium nitrate, if applied in combination with DSMA, may act as an activator and may increase the rapidity of Bermudagrass coverage." |
