Abstract/Contents: | "Properly designed turf research programs should embrace appropriate fundamental field plot techniques, including proper designs of trials to attain the objectives, special procedures adapted to the characteristics of turf, methods of accurately evaluating the results, and statistical interpretation of the data. Most common field plot designs are adaptable to turf research except that plot sizes are usually smaller because of the high cost of turf maintenance, and because most turf research equipment is rather small. Border effects on turf plots have been found to be quite small when plot areas are well defined, and when neighboring plots are of equal aggressiveness. Measurements of turfgrass performance may be divided into characteristics of response, range or scale of measurement, and growth stage at which measurement is taken. Macro differences have been measured as subjective comparisons to an ideal standard, or between existing limits. Experienced individuals may be able to observe subjective measurements with considerable accuracy, but comparisons between individuals loses accuracy because of variable standards. Objective measurements can be obtained with less bias, with often such measurements are not true parameters of the response being evaluated. Statistical analysis prevents false interpretations of results and becomes more useful as differences measured become smaller." |
