| Abstract/Contents: | "Turfgrass management, like the whole field of Agronomy, is an applied science which relies upon a use of the fundamental developments of many basic sciences. Turfgrass management has made use of advances in the knowledge of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and machinery. It has profited from a better knowledge of the physiology of growth and from a better understanding of the physical and chemical behavior of soils. Improved turf plants are now in use because the knowledge and skill of plant breeders have been brought to bear on the need for these improved plants. Research in turfgrass management is relatively young. The Rhode Island Experiment Station probably was the first institution to do research in turf, having initiated work in 1890. Individuals doing research in a limited way had done some work prior to that date. J. B. Olcott of South Manchester, Vermont, was known to have started a turf garden of selected strains in 1885. It may be said, however, that most of the research in turf management has been done during the years since the Agronomy Society was organized. Some of the advances are reported in this paper." |
