Abstract/Contents: | "Gardening magazines often suggest "gimmicks" for quicker or better seeding and patching of lawns. Are pre-treatment of lawn grass seeds effective, and if so where justified? Bluegrass and fescue, representing the major fine lawn grasses, were tested by pre-treatment with fertilizers, urea, gibberellins, hot and cold soaking, and for various soaking periods. Most treatments showed no benefit in either quicker or more thorough sprouting when compared to a control given optimum conditions. Under marginal conditions certain treatments, including that of the gibberellins, improved germination. No method was found capable of bringing slow germinating strains up to the level of normal strains. Conditions where pre-treatment is of special utility, including seed imbedded in a mulch-mat, will be discussed." |
