| Abstract/Contents: | "Nitrogen requirements for maintenance of Bermudagrass and bentgrass putting green turf was studied in 1956 and 1957. Different rates and different frequencies of inorganic, organic, and synthetic organic nitrogen fertilizers were evaluated. Data on clipping yield, soil nitrate levels, pH and turf quality were recorded. Analysis of the data showed significant differences in clipping yields, nitrate levels and pH. A single application of 12 pounds per 1,000 square feet of synthetic organic nitrogen (38% nitrogen) maintained adequate growth and quality for about 2½ months. Where 6 pounds of nitrogen were applied at the beginning of the season and at mid-season, a more uniform growth rate was maintained in addition to better quality turf than occurred on plots where only one application was made. More fluctuation occurred in soil nitrate levels on plots receiving inorganic nitrogen fertilizer. Applications of 12 and 8 pounds of synthetic organic nitrogen fertilizer in October provided adequate levels of nitrogen for bentgrass growth from November through March." |
