Abstract/Contents:"Crown vetch (Coronilla varia, L.) and Birdsfood trefoil (Lotus corniculatus, L.) were seeded in late August, 1952, in 3 replications on a cut section of a highway slop in mixtures with creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra, L.), Ky.-31 tall fescue (Festuca elatior, L.) and domestic ryegrass (Lolium spp.) at various rates. Plots were 5 feet by 20 feet in size. Slope gradients averaged approximately 1½ on 1. Soil reaction was adjusted to pH 6.5 and 1,200 pounds per acre of a 5-10-15 fertilizer were applied prior to seeding. Establishment data for grasses and legumes is reported as number of plants per square foot in October of seeding year (1952) and in June, 1953. Survival and persistence data are presented as percent of legume plants in June, 1954, and percent of total cover contributed by grasses and legumes for 1955 through 1957. Crown vetch was established successfully under the very severe conditions of the experiment when seeded in association with the grasses used. It has continued to provide satisfactory slope cover for protection against dust and erosion through the 5-year period of the experiment. Birdsfoot trefoil was affected to a significantly greater extent by grass competition during the establishment period and the surviving population has failed to provide cover comparable to crown vetch during the test period."
