Abstract/Contents:"Growth measurements of turf grasses have been confined largely to clipping weight determinations. In research there is need for a quantitative method to evaluate turfgrass performance in the terms of lateral growth. The Double-Quadrat (D-Q) method was devised by the authors after recognizing that lateral growth involved two components, lateral extension and density. Some grasses produce rapidly-growing runners with poor leaf density. Although this growth habit is not desirable in turf production, an accurate evaluation of lateral vigor may be of considerable interest in plant breeding. On the other hand, other grasses which extend very slowly may develop full density as they extend. The D-Q method makes use of a quadrat divided into percentile areas. Double determinations are made for each plot. First, lateral extension is determined by recording the number of percentile areas in which any growth has extended. The second reading measures density by recording the number of percentile areas completely covered with turf. A comparison of these two determinations reveals the growth habit of the grass. Also, the two sets of readings may be duly weighted and combined into a single-valued growth index. The D-Q method has been used in turf research at the University of Florida for the past 4 years to classify breeding stock, evaluate propagation studies, and determine seasonal growth responses."
