Abstract/Contents:"For many years yield has been the principal method for evaluating growth responses in turf grass fertility investigations. Yield data offer a quantitative means of evaluation and can be collected with greater ease than qualitative data. Furthermore, qualitative evaluations require a greater degree of experience for best results. However, when yield is used as a criteria of turf performance, the assumption is made that a high degree of correlation exists between yield and turf quality. Recent studies at the University of Florida indicate that this hypothesis is false in some cases. Fertility investigations with Everglades 1 and Bayshore Bermudagrasses revealed that although Bayshore produced significantly more yield, Everglades 1 was consistently superior in turf quality. There was no correlation between varieties, indicating that yield could not be used as an accurate index of turf performance when comparing these varieties. On the other hand, the correlation coefficient for the intra-varietal comparisons between yield and quality were 0.962 for Bayshore and 0.813 for Everglades 1. Based on these results, it should be valid in future work to use yield as a complete performance index for studies within these varieties. This study indicates that similar appearing varieties may perform differently. The degree of correlation between yield and quality must be determined for each variety before the aforementioned hypothesis can be accepted."
