Abstract/Contents:"Urea-formaldehyde fertilizer, 38% nitrogen, and an 8-6-2 fertilizer with 75% of its nitrogen derived from urea-formaldehyde and 25% from sulphate of ammonia were applied on lawn turf on May 2, 1956, at Kingston and on fairway turf at the Point Judith Country Club on May 15, 1956. The evaluation of data for one season shows that urea-formaldehyde at the 2 and 4 pound rates of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet produced only fair results; however, at the 8 and 10 pound rates it produced a good to excellent turf quality throughout the growing season. The initial turf response was somewhat slower than the response from inorganic fertilizers. An 8-6-2 fertilizer, containing 75% of its nitrogen from urea-formaldehyde and 25% from sulphate of ammonia, resulted in a more favorable initial response, and also produced a fairly uniform seasonal turf quality characteristic of slowly releasing sources of nitrogen. The results of one year indicate that urea-formaldehyde is an effective slow releasing source of nitrogen for turfgrass culture. Data recorded in April, 1957 indicate that nitrogen is still available, one year after application, in plots where urea-formaldehyde was applied at the rates of 8 and 10 pounds. The use of urea-formaldehyde in fertilizer mixtures appears to be practical, particularly when used with some form of quickly soluble nitrogen such as sulphate of ammonia to give a rapid initial growth response."
