Abstract/Contents:"Calcium cyanamide was used as a source of nitrogen in comparison with other nitrogenous materials to determine what, if any, injury it might cause to dormant Bermudagrass turf and its possible value as a turfgrass fertilizer. Applications were made in late winter when Bermudagrass was dormant. Rates ranged from 2 to 10.5 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet of area. Other sources of nitrogen were urea-formaldehyde and ammonium sulfate. Little or no injury to the Bermuda was observed at the low application rates while severe burning was evident at the higher rates. Approximately 4 to 6 weeks were required for recovery of the most severely injured plots. Duration of response to nitrogen from the calcium cyanamide source was comparable to that of the urea-formaldehyde at all application rates. Plots receiving the highest quality rating in late summer were those receiving 10.5 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet as calcium cyanamide."
