Abstract/Contents: | "Seven Kentucky bluegrass and 8 red fescue varieties were seeded at Palmer, Alaska (Latitude 61° 31'N) in 1962, fertilized with 4 and8 pounds nitrogen/1000 square feet and clipped at one and two inches during 1962, 63 & 64. Among bluegrass varieties, Park exhibited earliest spring growth but was quickly overtaken by Merion which had the best turf quality throughout all there seasons. Park, Common, Delta and Troy were severely infected by Helminthosporium. Best red fescues were Duraturf, Olds and Viking. There was no evidence of any disease on any of the red fescue varieties. Turf density of the best fescues equaled the best bluegrasses. Storage of reserves by freeze-up was highest in bluegrasses with Merion superior. The non-hardy Pennlawn, Chewings, and Illahee red fescue stored lowest levels of reserves. Response to the 8-pound nitrogen rate was only evident in turf color. Density, reserve storage and winter survival were as good or better at the 4-pound rate. Clipping at one inch had no deleterious effects and appeared advantageous with respect to earliness of spring growth. Best red fescue performance occurred with low nitrogen and low cut." |
