Abstract/Contents: | "The fructose level of creeping bentgrass leaf tissue was measured by a water extraction followed by an alcohol extraction to determine sugars in tissue of bentgrass sod grown at 60°, 70°, and 80°F. in controlled climate chambers. At 80°F. the fast, initial growth rate rapidly peaked and declined to a constant rate, but fructose levels steadily rose, which indicated that metabolite fructose is not the limiting factor for growth. At 70° the growth rate peaked gradually and slowly declined to a higher constant rate. Meanwhile, fructose levels did not appreciably rise which indicates that the sugars are being consumed in the growth processes. At 60° the growth rate peaked slowly, then rapidly declined to a constant level, equal to the 80°, but, again, the fructose level steadily rose, strongly indicating that the sugars were not being utilized in the growth. Under conditions of this test, the 70° F. was the optimum constant temperature for bentgrass culture. This indicates that internal mechanisms for utilization of fructose in growth are being blocked by the higher and lower temperatures, although the production of fructose is not affected." |
