| Abstract/Contents: | "Several chemicals and cultivation treatments were compared for their effectiveness in controlling nutgrass. The test area was tilled to a depth of 10 inches, followed by disking and rototilling before application of chemicals. Four chemicals were applied at different rates and methods in combination with various additional cultural treatments. The chemical-tillage combinations included applications following the initial tillage operation and following 1, 2, and 3 additional tillages at weekly intervals. Counts of nutgrass were made before the initial tillage and periodically after application of chemicals. The more significant reduction in nutgrass density was obtained when plots were tilled several times before application of Mylone, Vapam, and EPTC. Methyl bromide applied after a rain, when soil moisture was high, resulted in a lower percent control. No regrowth of nutgrass was visible in plots treated with 30 pounds of EPTC per acre 2 months after application. Length of residual of the various materials is also being studied." |
