Abstract/Contents:"Yield determinations were reported on a common Bermudagrass green in 1955. It was converted in 1957 to Tifgreen Bermudagrass. Chemical composition of clippings and yield were determined on Tifgreen in 1958. Results are presented showing the same yield under similar fertility. Tifgreen showed more even growth, more efficient nitrogen utilization, and lower potash, calcium and magnesium requirements than common Bermudagrass. Phosphorus, sulphur, and iron utilization were approximately the same. As much sulphur trioxide was removed in the clippings as phosphoric acid. Tifgreen clippings contained more aluminum than common Bermudagrass. Yield of Tifgreen and common was almost identical - 119.50 vs. 119.69 lbs., respectively. Tifgreen contained 6.71 lbs. nitrogen, 1.64 lbs. phosphoric acid, and 2.66 lbs. potash. Corresponding figures for common were 5.62 lbs. N, 1.48 lbs. P2O5 and 3.36 lbs. K2O. One hundred pounds 6-2-4 analysis fertilizer would provide enough of the three major elements to restore the amounts removed in daily clippings of either grass during the most active growing period of early May to early September. The data does not include the amount of plant food contained in the turf and ignores requirements for root development, and anything lost as a result of soil fixation."
