| Abstract/Contents: | "Seventeen varieties, common lots, or breeder's selections of Kentucky bluegrass were seeded in four replications during September of 1956. Wide differences in the number of plants emerged four weeks after seeding, due to variety or lot of seed, are illustrated by the following counts of plants per square inch: Merion - 1.4, Delta - 2.1, Park - 3.2, and Minnesota common lot - 4.6. All were seeded at 1 pound per 1,000 sq. ft. Sample average weed counts were made in September of 1957. Weed counts per square foot were: Merion - 5.2, Delta - 8.4, Park - 5.0, Minnesota common 4.8, and Canada common lot - 9.1. The average weed count of all varieties and lots when mowed at a 3/4-inch height was 9.5 per sq. ft.; when mowed at 2 inches, 2.9 per sq. ft. There was no correlation of seedling count in 1956 and weed count in 1957. All plots were uniformly sprayed with 2,4-D after the September of 1957 weed count. Weed counts were again made in the fall of 1958 and 1959. The average weed count in October of 1959 ranged from 0.1 weeds per sq. ft. for Merion and Penn. K-1 to 2.2 weeds per sq. ft. for a Kentucky common lot. The average of all varieties and lots when mowed at 3/4 inch was 2.1, and when mowed at 2 inches was 0.2 weeds per sq. ft." |
