Abstract/Contents:"In April of 1959 a study was initiated in Washington, D. C. to screen a number of herbicides for pre-emergence control of crabgrass in established bluegrass turf. The objective being to determine if economical control can be obtained from one treatment and if so, is time of application a factor. Twelve materials were included in the 1959 test, five of which, Dacthal, Xytron, Chlordane, calcium arsenate and Pax, showed promise and are being continued the second year using three dates of application and a combination of rates. Treatments were applied as either spray or broadcast. Following the usual maintenance practices of National Capital Parks, none of the plots were watered at any time. The turf was cut at 1 1/2 inches in the spring and fall and at 2 inches during the hot summer months. Estimates and actual plant counts of crabgrass infestations were made throughout the growing season."
