| Annotation from Turfgrass History and Literature: Lawns, Sports, and Golf, by James B Beard, Harriet J. Beard and James C Beard: | "A relatively rare, small book on lawn establishment and culture. It evolved from a bulletin written for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. There is an attempt to make the content more science-based than many lawn books published in the 1930s. In a section titled Western Lawn Practice, Charles Parker stated the following:
Mowing grass too low and too often is a practice that is doing a great deal of injury to lawns. This is the last word in the care of lawns and is based on long continued experiments by the Kansas State College. Three inches is the best height to set the lawn mower for mowing a Blue Grass lawn, according to the newest theory. Cutting the grass any shorter reduces its vigor. The Kansas authorities go so far as to say that mowing need only be done when the grass gets so tall that it is ready to fall over. All of these revolutionary statements are made from the viewpoint of maintaining a dense turf." p. 314 |
