Abstract/Contents:"Seashore paspalum has been extensively studied for intraspecific variation and tolerance mechanisms against salinity stress. Although drought being one of the foremost concern in managing turfgrasses, relatively less attention has been given to seashore paspalums drought tolerance. In this study, proteomic analysis was performed to identify drought-responsive proteins responsible for varied level of tolerance of drought sensitive ('Seastar') and tolerant ('UGP113') genotypes. Two genotypes were grown under well-watered and controlled drought stress conditions. Controlled drought stress was created by allowing plants to lose equal daily evapotranspiration and watered only if evapotranspiration exceeded 50 ml. Results showed 41 proteins were significantly altered due to drought stress in two genotypes. Proteins that were differentially regulated were the proteins involved in metabolisms, energy, defense, protein synthesis, cell growth and signal transduction. Several metabolisms proteins including serine hydroxymethyltransferase were down regulated in 'Seastar' but constitutively expressed in 'UGP113'. Defensive proteins such as peroxidase 27 were enhanced in 'UGP113' but declined in 'Seastar'. Further studies on metabolomics analysis of seashore paspalum drought tolerance would provide comprehensive understanding of drought tolerance mechanisms in seashore paspalum."
