Abstract/Contents:"Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) is a problematic turfgrass weed, which is commonly resistant to various herbicide sites of action. Research was conducted to characterize a suspected simazine- and pronamide-resistant annual bluegrass population using a dose-response study, and to determine the efficacy of pre- and post-emergence herbicide tank mixtures for control. Greenhouse dose-response experiments were conducted in 2021 on a Poa annua population from Columbus, Mississippi to evaluate its response to seven rates of simazine and pronamide (0 to 18 × standard labelled rates). The simazine rate required to reduce foliar biomass 50% relative to the nontreated (GR50) for the resistant (R) biotype was 10 times greater than that of the susceptible (S) biotype (2.59 vs. 0.26 kg ai ha-1, respectively). Similarly, the pronamide rate required for GR50 of the R biotype was 20 times greater than that of the S biotype (6.62 vs. 0.32 kg ai ha-1, respectively). Field research was conducted in 2019 and 2020 to evaluate common pre- and post-emergence tank mixtures to control this (at the time) suspected resistant population. Control (%) and cover were assessed on 10 March, 2020 and 3 March, 2021. Sequential applications (applied 25 November and 20 December, 2019; and 17 November and 1 January, 2020) of 0.025 kg indaziflam ha-1, 1.12 kg simazine ha-1, and Tribute Total (0.04 kg combined ai ha-1) tank-mixed was the only treatment that provided > 90% control in both years. Comparably, a single application (applied 25 and 17 November, respective to years) of 1.12 kg prodiamine ha-1, 1.12 kg simazine ha-1, and 0.019 kg trifloxysulfuron ha-1 tank-mixed provided 92 and 89% control. Results varied across years for other combination and stand-alone applications. Ongoing research evaluates the resistance mechanism of this and other multiple-resistant populations."
