Abstract/Contents:"At the O.J. Noer Research Station in Verona, Wisconsin, a clover inter-seeding study began in 2019 when clover seed was spread over existing Kentucky bluegrass turf plots. The plots include different initial rates of inter-seeding with white clover, strawberry clover, and microclover. Kentucky bluegrass is the most popular grass used for Wisconsin lawns, but has high nitrogen demands to compete with weeds. Consumers usually desire dense and even coverage of grasses for lawns, which typically means weeds are undesirable and high fertilizer rates for maximizing grass growth are applied. However, clovers fix atmospheric nitrogen which may be accessible to the grass and allow for a dense coverage grass, few other weeds, and lower fertilizer rates. Through examining biomass of the different plots, evaluation of the percent of plots covered by non-clover weeds, and nutrient balances, certain clovers and rates may be suitable for low maintenance, non-fertilized lawns and promote long-term abilities of the soil to support optimal lawn growth with minimal environmental impacts. The information produced by this study could inform homeowners and other lawn caretakers in Wisconsin about efficient and aesthetic alternatives to other lawn care practices through clover inter-seeding."
