Abstract/Contents:"The activity of plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) including sting-nematodes (Belonolaimus spp.) often causes impaired root growth leading to reduced turfgrass strength and result in severe damage and voids in canopy. Spotted spurge (Euphorbia maculata L.) is an annual broadleaf weed which is found in dry and low fertility soils but particularly in turf thinned by stress. In Florida it is commonly found in nematode-infested bermudagrass stands, which are thus characterized by elevated susceptibility to herbicide treatments and reduced recovery. The control of this weed species in Florida became more challenging in recent years. A field study was conducted in central and southern Florida in 2021 to evaluate various recuperation strategies for sting nematode and spurge-infested 'Latitude 36' bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) turf. Those strategies combined the use of various programs utilizing selected nematicides (1,3-dichloropropene and fluopyram) and herbicides (metsulfuron-methyl, pyraflufen-ethyl, sulfentrazone, sulfentrazone, trifloxysulfuron-sodium, thiencarbazone methyl + foramsulfuron + halosulfuron-methyl, 2,4-D + fluroxypyr-meptyl + halauxifen-methyl, 2,4-D + dicamba + dichlorprop-p + carfentrazone). Nematicide treatments were applied either once or twice on a 4-wk interval starting from Sept. 22, 2021, and Sept. 29, 2021, in central and southern Florida, respectively. Herbicide treatments were applied for a total of two sequential applications on a 4-wk interval starting either on the onset of nematicide applications from Sept. 23, 2021, and Sept. 30, 2021, or a month after the initiation of nematicide treatments from Oct. 22, 2021, and Oct. 28, 2021. The most efficacious herbicides regarding target weed removal were 2,4-D + fluroxypyr-meptyl + halauxifen-methyl at 4.68 L ha-1, 2,4-D + dicamba + dichlorprop-p + carfentrazone at 4.68 L ha-1. However, those herbicides also resulted in unacceptable damage to turf. The use of 1,3-dichloropropene not only resulted in rapid turfgrass recovery from nematode damage, but also alleviated the injury with herbicides."
