Abstract/Contents:"Trinexapac-ethyl is a plant growth regulator (PGR) widely used to reduce turfgrass mowing frequency. Efficacy of a PGR is regularly assessed via measurements of clipping yield that are quantified by researchers in units of weight. Recently, golf course superintendents have started evaluating PGR efficacy via assessments of clipping volume. Field research was conducted in Knoxville, TN in summer 2022 to evaluate the relationship between clipping weight (g) and clipping volume (mL) following trinexapac-ethyl applications to warm-season turfgrasses. Experimental formulations of trinexapac-ethyl were applied on 'Latitude 36' hybrid bermudagrass (C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) and 'Trinity' zoysiagrass (Zoysia matrella). Separate experiments were conducted on each species with treatments initially applied on 13 June 2022 to plots (1.5 m2) organized in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Sequential applications were made on 27 June 2022 and 11 July 2022. Trinexapac-ethyl was applied at 97 g ha-1 in four different formulations; a non-treated check was included for comparison. Clippings were collected twice per week with clipping volume assessed via a graduated cylinder; clipping weight was quantified after drying in a 105 C forced-air oven for 48 hours. Linear regression models were fit to clipping weight and volume data for each species. Clipping weight and volume were more closely associated on hybrid bermudagrass (R2 = 0.81) than zoysiagrass (R2 = 0.56). Future research to further explore the relationship between clipping volume and dry weight is warranted."
