Abstract/Contents:"Heat and drought stress are major factors limiting the growth of cool-season turf grass species. Annual bluegrass (Poa annua) exhibits greater decline in quality during the summer months than creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) on golf courses where they are co-present. However, little is known about the mechanisms that govern Poas lower tolerance to heat and drought stress. The goal of this study is to compare changes in metabolite content of Poa under heat and drought stress to that of creeping bentgrass to identify significant pathways associated with Poa's lower tolerance to summer stresses. Creeping bentgrass, and Poa were grown under three treatment conditions: a control well-watered at 22/17 °C (day/night); heat stressed well-watered at 35/30 °C; and drought stressed unwatered at 22/17 °C in growth chambers for 42 days. At 21 days of stress drought plants were watered to test post-drought recovery. Leaf chlorophyll content, electrolyte leakage, leaf relative water content; visual turf quality, canopy temperatures, percent canopy cover, and dark green color index were measured weekly during the study. Additionally, leaf tissue was collected for both species treatment groups after 21 days of stress and at the end of the experiment. Tissue samples were prepared and analyzed for metabolite content using LC-MS. Poa was more severely damaged during heat stress and recovered from drought at a slower rate upon rewatering compared to creeping bentgrass. Differences in metabolite content were identified between the two species along with their associated pathways. These pathways are key to better understanding Poa's low tolerance to summer stress, and will be helpful in developing more efficient management strategies for golf courses with Poa greens."
