Abstract/Contents:"Surface hardness is an important sports turf characteristic as it impacts ball bounce, player safety and the ability of the playing surface to resist deformation. Surface hardness is measured on athletic surfaces using a Clegg Impact Soil Tester (CIST) and on golf course greens using a CIST or TruFirm Turfgrass Firmness Meter (TruFirm). Because of its lower cost and lighter weight, the TruFirm offers potential advantages for use on limited budget athletic fields. The objective of this research was to determine if CIST surface hardness can be predicted from TruFirm measurements collected from natural grass athletic field surfaces. This was done by collecting volumetric water content (VWC), CIST and TruFirm hardness measurements from simulated traffic athletic field research plots and municipal athletic fields before (NT) and after subjected to traffic (T), and for comparative purposes, from golf courses without regards to traffic. When accounting for VWC, the TruFirm with moderate level confidence (r2=71) predicted CIST responses on greens. On athletic field surfaces mowed at 2.5 cm, no more than 42% (r2=0.42) of variability could be explained by the TruFirm measurement and VWC indicating the former is not a confident predictor of CIST measurements on athletic fields."
